UCSF is one of ten campuses in the University of California educational system, but is the only one focused exclusively on healthcare, shared UCSF Health CEO Mark Laret. The organization is one of the world's leading medical research centers, as well as a prominent part of the San Francisco community. "The challenge for all of us in the healthcare industry is that we aren't sure of what the underlying economic business model is." During his visit to the Systems Leadership class on May 29, 2018, Laret discussed with Lecturer Robert Siegel how UCSF manages its complex ecosystem comprised of patients, doctors, researchers, government and academia.
