In 2018, the aluminium, cement, chemicals and steel industries, recognized as harder-to-abate sectors, accounted for 5.8 Gt of CO2 emissions, which is 68% of all industry emissions and accounts for more than 16% of total global emissions. If no action is taken, emissions from these sectors could double by mid-century. As demand for these industry products is expected to increase substantially, due to population growth and the need for materials to support the low-carbon economy, these industries face important questions on how to meet this demand while significantly reducing their direct and indirect emissions. - How can the materials industries play an active role in the energy transition? - What are the opportunities for collaborative action among the materials industries to accelerate the transition to net-zero emissions?
