The May Bumps are an annual competition between collegiate boat clubs, taking place in June (of course) on the River Cam. The Cam is too narrow to race side-by-side, so the rowing crews chase one another and try to bump into the boat in front. This is how a crew moves up the rankings. The boats at the top of their rankings when the competition ends are known as Head of the River.
