UN Web TV "Add Your Voice" series – The number of asylum seekers and migrants in Calais has increased in the past few months, creating tensions in this French coastal city. They are from Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, and Eritrea.
Nearly all see Calais as a stopping point on their way to UK, where they believe there are better opportunities. For all those in Calais fleeing war and persecution, the dream of England means they will continue to put their lives at risk in a country where they believe there are better opportunities.
Stefan Maier, Protection Officer at UNHCR says providing for a more effective and a more credible asylum system is of essence, so as to avoid people having to risk their lives in very risky journeys.
