Let's look at short vs. long duration in option trading. Should you go for 5-day, 10-day, or 0-day options, or extend to 20, 40, 60, or 80 days? It depends on how you’re managing capital and risk.
Shorter durations increase price risk but provide more frequent opportunities. With longer durations, price risk is lower, but if you’re a positive-theta trader, time decay (theta) won’t work in your favor as quickly. For negative-theta traders, longer duration can be beneficial as theta works more gradually.
The key question is: Are you a buyer or seller? Buyers generally want more time, while sellers often prefer less time for quicker theta benefits. However, shorter durations give less range, so balancing duration with your risk style is essential.
If you want to dive deeper into fine-tuning your strategies, I cover these specifics in my workshops and coaching. Let me know if you’re interested in learning more!
