500,000 low-Earth-orbit satellites are planned for launch by the end of the 2030s. Researchers modelled the impact these might have on space-based telescopes' view of the Universe, and saw that many images could be unusable due to streaks of light reflected by the satellites. The team say their work is a worst-case scenario and propose a series of strategies to help protect the night sky.
