SOUTH INDIAN BREAKFAST FEAST + Tour of Historic GOLCONDA FORT in HYDERABAD, INDIA:

Hey guys, Sam here with another India episode and today we’re going to be kicking things off with a South Indian breakfast feast! We were lucky enough to have two locals show us around during our time in Hyderabad, Sailesh and Rakesh, and on this particular morning we met at Minerva cafe, where ate:

1) Vada - a savoury, fried lentil doughnut

2) Upma - a semolina dish with vegetables and chillies

3) Pongal - a rice lentil dish served with sambar and chutney

4) Puri - a puffed-up, hollow flatbread paired with curries

5) Uttapam - a savoury pancake that’s a bit thicker than a dosa and full of nuts and vegetables

6) Minerva’s speciality Coffee - which is served with milk, no sugar and yet it had a natural sweetness to it.

So let’s jump right into this South Indian breakfast feast and then we’ll take you to visit Golconda Fort, which once stored the world-famous Koh-i-Noor diamond within its vaults. After that feast of a breakfast, we all got in the car together and drove out to Golconda Fort for a tour. This fort is located about 11 kilometres outside of Hyderabad and it’s one of the city’s top attractions.

To give you a bit more information, Golkonda Fort dates back to the 16th-century and it’s considered to be one of the finest strongholds in India. It was built atop a 120m-high granite hill offering a wide vantage point so any approaching enemies could be spotted.

This fort was constructed to be impenetrable! The gates were studded with iron spikes to stop war elephants from breaking them down, its water pipeline was well-concealed so that their supply would not be interrupted during a siege, and its advanced acoustic system meant that even the smallest sound at the entry gates would echo across the whole complex.

Why all this security? Well, the city of Golkonda was known for its diamond trade, and many diamonds and gems were sold here from the nearby mines. The famous Koh-i-Noor diamond, which is believed to have come from the Kollur Mines on the south bank of the River Krishna, was even stored within the walls of the Golconda Fort at one time.

The climb up to the top of Golconda Fort was long and sweaty, but very much worth it for the views we got to enjoy in the end. My one big tip is to bring lots of water so you can stay hydrated!
