On a sunny day near Stanford's Terman Fountain, applause is heard as incoming freshman cheer for the boat they constructed earlier that morning. The team building activity caps a packed four weeks before the school year begins in which Leland Scholars get hands-on experience in chemistry and writing classes. The program is designed to help ease the transition to Stanford for students who may be the first members of their families to attend college, come from low-income households or are graduates of high schools with limited curricular offerings.
