Join us for a day trip from Tokyo where we visit Mount Takao (高尾山) to enjoy some hiking and a green escape from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. We enjoy some unique Japanese street food snacks that you can purchase while visiting Mount Takao (高尾山).
After researching Tokyo day trip one of the most interesting options was going to Mount Takao. We had spent quite a bit of time in both Osaka and Tokyo and we were both craving a day out in nature. In order for us to get to Mount Takao we took the Keio Line directly from Shinjuku station which only cost 381 Yen and took 50 minutes.
Upon arriving we decided to grab a bite to eat opting for Soba noodles and udon. To get up Mount Takao you have three different options. You can hike the entire way, go on a cable car or take a lift. The cable car and lift are both 480 Yen and we decided to go with the cable car on the way up and lift on the way down. In hindsight we feel the lift is a much better option for taking in the scenery without the crowds.
To hike to the top of Mount Takao it only took 40 minutes and we got to visit some fascinating temples along the way before being rewarded with incredible views.
On the way back we decided to try some unique Japanese street food snacks that you can find at Mount Takao. We had the following:
1) Tenguyaki (Angry bird shaped shells stuffed with red bean paste for 140 Yen
2) Ice cream with vanilla and a nutty orange flavor in a special cone
3) Matcha cheese tart with red bean paste - 250 Yen each.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our day trip to Mount Takao from Tokyo and would highly recommend it to all of you guys.

Tokyo Day Trip to Hike Mount Takao (高尾山) + Japanese Street Food Snacks Travel Video Transcript:
Greetings from Tokyo, Japan. Yes, good morning. It is time for a day trip today. We've been spending the last two weeks in Tokyo surrounded by sky scrappers and concrete and we thought we need a nature escape. Yeah. And Sam has been talking about Mount Takao (高尾山) I feel like for weeks. For days. It has been a long time. I've been wanting to go hiking. I've been wanting to going to see the green side of Japan so yeah very pumped to be doing that today. So yeah that is the plan today. Um Mount Takao (高尾山) is about an hour west of Tokyo. So not too far and we're planning to spend the day there.
We have now made it to Shinjuku (新宿区) and we're looking for the Keio Line.
We just got our tickets. You can buy round trip tickets or one way. We want to take the cable car up and the lift down. So yeah we paid 480 Yen per person.
Now we have to walk about 40 minutes to the mountain top. But along the way they have a whole bunch of little shops selling ice creams and little street food snacks. And you have souvenirs stands.
Um so yeah it can take plenty of breaks along the way. And also so far the path has not been very steep at all. So yeah it is just a pleasant walk. It is nice and shaded. We're in the middle of the forest and I'm liking this. It is a nice little escape from Tokyo.
That is a wrap for our day trip to Mount Takao (高尾山). We really had a good time here. I have to say. Like not just nature but also the different modes of transportation that you can take up and down the mountain. Like the chairlift and the cable car. Sampling all of the food it was just a really fun day out in nature. It was relaxing. It was tasty. So yeah if you guys are spending a bit of time in Tokyo and you feel like you need a city break. This trip is super easy to plan. You can do it on your own and I would highly recommend it.
