United Nations Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura again today (23 Feb) called for an urgent ceasefire to relieve the “appalling suffering” of civilians in Eastern Ghouta, and stop the heavy bombings there, as well as the “indiscriminate” mortar shelling of Syria’s capital Damascus.
Alessandra Vellucci, UN Spokesperson in Geneva told reporters “the Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura reiterates that the humanitarian situation of the civilians in Eastern Ghouta is appalling and therefore we are in urgent need for a ceasefire that stops both the horrific heavy bombardment of Eastern Ghouta and the indiscriminate mortar shelling on Damascus.”
Vellucci said, on behalf of the Special Envoy “the ceasefire needs to be followed by immediate, unhindered humanitarian access to eastern Ghouta and evacuation of sick and injured.”
The three guarantor countries of the so-called Astana process -- Russia, Iran and Turkey – were called upon to urgently meet to re-install de-escalation zones in Syria.
The spokesperson added “the Special Envoy calls again upon the Astana guarantors to hold an urgent meeting to reinstall the de-escalation. He warned that this situation cannot be a repeat of Aleppo.”
The UN Security Council is expected to vote on a ceasefire later today in New York.
