In 2000, the #UN Security Council adopted resolution 1325 to draw attention to women in armed conflict and their role in #peacekeeping and #security. At the UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial meeting being held in London from 7-8 September, the Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award is given for the first time in recognition of the dedication and effort of a peacekeeper who has promoted the principles of UN Security Council resolution 1325.
Major Aichatou Ousmane Issaka (Niger) is the winner of this year's award. She served, at the rank of a captain, with the #peacekeeping mission in #Mali (#MINUSMA) from 2015 to 2016. Major Issaka spent time reaching out to women in the local community and accompanied what would have been all-male patrols, making them more approachable and accessible to women and children.
