Special Briefing by Mr. Ján Kubiš, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), on the situation concerning Iraq.
-----------------
UN Special Representative for Iraq Ján Kubiš urged political leaders in the country to “listen to the voice of the people, and accelerate the process of formation of a patriotic, inclusive and non-sectarian government.”
Speaking to the Council today (08 Aug) in New York, the Special Representative Ján Kubiš said “the security and protection environment remain volatile, posing serious protection risks to Iraqi civilians, abductions, disappearances, detention, increased risk of sexual and gender based violence, and violations of child’s rights continue, for many combinations of these factors has led to secondary or repeatedly displacement.”
Kubiš also noted that following the parliamentary elections on 12 May 2018, complaints and allegations of electoral fraud and mismanagement resulted in the decision to conduct a partial manual ballot recount, thereby delaying establishment of a new government. The Special Representative welcomed the orderly, transparent, credible and well-organized conduct of the recount.
