UN warns Mediterranean Sea death toll exceeds 5,000 - "the worst annual death toll ever"

Two mass drownings in the Mediterranean Sea - in which an estimated 100 people died on Thursday, 22 December - have pushed this year’s death toll to more than 5,000, a new record, the UN has said.
Briefing the media, a spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), William Spindler, highlighted the need for legal alternatives for people trying to reach Europe.
