Police Commissioner Priscilla Makotose explains the policing mandate of the African Union/United Nations Hybrid operation in Darfur (UNAMID). Based on the mandate, the police component protects civilians by keeping peace in the Jebel Marra area and peacebuilding in the rest of Darfur. UNAMID police officers go on patrol in the internally displaced persons camps and surrounding areas to keep the population safe and secure.
Through developing community policing initiatives, developing the capacity of the Sudan police force and gender mainstreaming of the national police, UNAMID police helps create a more protective environment in Darfur for the population.
UNAMID police has the largest number of female UN police officers of any UN peace operation, which help engaging the female and male population.
United Nations police are deployed in 11 peacekeeping operations, as well as 6 Special Political Missions to help restore confidence in host-State police and rule of law structures and serving to protect civilians, providing electoral and border security and management, limiting the effects of transnational organised crime, investigating and preventing cases of sexual and gender-based violence. Over 12,000 UN police officers from 90 countries serve the United Nations as individual police officers (IPOs), in formed police units (FPUs) or as United Nations staff (P-staff).
