Back in August of 2020, Tim Kaine and Roger Brown were on a bike trip up the Blue Ridge Parkway in Southern Virginia. In the town of Floyd, which has a strong musical tradition, Tim shared his idea for a song called "Self-Unemployed.” Roger recruited veteran writer and Berklee songwriting professor Mark Simos (Alison Krauss, Infamous Stringdusters) to write with them. Roger asked friends Garry West and Alison Brown to produce the song and they immediately thought of Compass Records artist Trey Hensley for lead vocals. In a bit of serendipity, Trey just happened to wear a Floyd General Store ball cap to the session.

Another charge was to find lots of Berklee alumni to join in on the session. Matt Rollings, Sierra Hull, Jordan Perlson, and Garry West are all Berklee alumni, and Darol Anger is professor emeritus in the String Department and a visiting artist in the Berklee American Roots Program. At Tim’s suggestion, the credits roll over a duet by Tim Kaine and Alison Brown of the old blues classic “Fishin’ Blues,” penned in 1911 by Chris Smith, which is about the timeless art of catching catfish. During the time we have been working on the tune, many people have decided to become or remain “self-unemployed” in the upheaval following the pandemic.
