Three parts of the brain play a role in depression - hippocampus, amygdala, prefrontal cortex and here's how:
Hippocampus - stores memory and controls production of cortisol. Long-term exposure to high cortisol levels slow down progression of new neurons and cause neurons in hippocampus to shrink. In turn, your memory is affected as well as behaviors linked with your sense of self
Prefrontal cortex regulates emotions, decision making. High level of cortisol the stress hormone the prefrontal cortex also shrinks
Amygdala facilitates emotional responses like pleasure and fear. In people with depression, amygdala is enlarged and more active due to cortisol. Hyperactive and
enlarged amygdala results in sleep disturbances and activity patterns
