The United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution today (16 Jan) establishing a special political mission to support the implementation of the Stockholm agreement and oversee a governorate-wide ceasefire in Yemen’s Hodeidah.
Through resolution 2452, the Security established the United Nations Mission to support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA) tasked with supporting the implementation of the Agreement on the City of Hodeidah and Ports of Hodeidah, Salif and Ras Issa as set out in the Stockholm Agreement for an initial period of six months.
The resolution sets out, for an initial six months, an increase from around 20 observers already in place to monitor the ceasefire, up to 75, positioned in and around the Red Sea port, where Yemen’s receives most of its commercial goods and lifesaving aid.
Parties to the conflict met in the Swedish town of Rimbo in mid-December and reach what has come be known as the Stockholm Agreement, which includes a ceasefire in and around the vital port city of Hodeidah – the conduit for nearly 80 per cent of Yemen’s life-saving food, medical aid and fuel.
UNMHA will also lead and support the functioning of the Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC) to oversee the governorate-wide ceasefire, redeployment of forces, and mine action operations in Hodeidah. It will also monitor the compliance of the parties to the conflict to their mutual redeployment from the city of Hodeidah and the ports of Hodeidah, Salif, and Ras Issa.
