Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide
Otari Native Botanic Garden and Wilton's Bush Reserve is the only public botanic garden in New Zealand dedicated solely to native plants. The Garden is a unique plant sanctuary and forest reserve and includes 100ha of native forest and 5ha of plant collections. Some of Wellington's oldest trees are here, including an 800-year-old rimu. It is classified as a Garden of National Significance by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture. Just a 10-minute drive from the CBD or take the no. 14 bus bound for Wilton and get off at the Warwick St/Wilton Rd stop. Tell the bus driver and they will be sure to stop.

Great short hike
Native bush in the middle of the city. This is what I love about Wellington. Lots of native birds and a huge range of plants. Easy stroll or slightly more strenuous hike. A great way to spend a Sunday morning.

Outstanding display garden for New Zealand plants
People not familiar with Wellington's winding streets might consider taking the #14 bus, which stops directly at the entrance.
The Otari Garden includes an extensive garden with massive natural-style stonework displaying plants of dry and wetland habitats in ways suitable for garden landscapes. There's also large areas with Otari's plant collections that have been built up over the years. A bridge connecting to the visitor centre gives a nice view down into the forest.
The garden's plant collections and design are of very high quality, including excellent accessibility.
The Wilton's Bush forest, which spreads out on hills beyond Otari Garden and gives it a fine setting, feels larger than it actually is. While the trails are quite safe, some of them can be muddy/slippery on wet days. I was able to get around despite an extremely stiff right knee, injured the day before. The forest, like the garden, reflects many years of restoration.
This is easily one of Wellington's best sights, at least for those who like New Zealand plants and forests, or are interested in garden design.

A nice intro to the outdoors for anybody!!
A lovely piece of New Zealand bush that will have something for anyone. A quick drive from the CBD (or a trip on the #14 bus) and you get to taste what it is like walking in a very safe wilderness. There are a number of trails, some wheelchair and stroller accessible and lots of plaques with facts. Some highlights are the treetop walk and the large lawn where you can have picnics and the kids can play safely (if supervised) in the stream. Well worth a visit. Public toilets in at least two places in the park.

Beautiful native bush with glow worms
My wife and I often visits Otari-Wilton's Bush during the day and walk the various trails, but the real magic of this patch of bush is going and seeing the glow worms after dark, they are pretty special.

a lovely little picnic walk with the family
Always pleasant on a sunny Wellington day. Sheltered and bushy makes a magicalo lunch spot with the children. A little stream safe to play around and a well structured free BBQ area

Although close to city a chance to expereince bush trails
Taken by a friend who lives in Wellington or we would not have know about the place. Once you get walking up the trails it is as though you are in the bush. Some of the trails are steep with a lot of climbing so not for the less mobile. It was a good opportunity to see a variety of plants from the region in a natural setting

Stunning.
Really great walks, beautifully maintained, good facilities. A real oasis on the edge of a residential area.

A magical place
Walk through this bush on dirt trails covered in the canopy of ancient species, revel in the sounds of the bird life, a meditative experience.
