48 HOURS IN DUBAI - So a great flight on Emirates gets us into DBX about midday. Getting through customs was a breeze, these guys have got this down. So you can jump on the metro, which is cheap, clean and on point or like us jump in a cab.

We are staying in the Deira area which is very near the airport so we are at the hotel in 10 mins. Deira is in the older part of the city and I really like this area, we are staying away from the big tourist areas and all the glam on this trip.

So the hotel we are staying in Flora Park, it is an apartment hotel and is a 2 min walk from the metro which is very handy.

Luckily we are here in February so the weather is a fantastic 20 degrees and great for walking around, Dubai as is the whole can get up to 50 at times and is unbearable.

Our first move is to get over to the nearest shopping mall to grab a new tripod (yes I forgot to bring one) this being a 4 min walk from the hotel at Deira City Centre, which is the mall and the name of the metro station. A shower and a coffee later we are set to go,

Our first stop is to Zam Zam a fantastic Mandi restaurant. Mandi is a Rice dish with lamb, chicken, fish and at times camel. We head out on foot and take the short 10 min walk, the weather is amazing and before you know we are here. We are greeted with bright neon lights and the place already looks busy. So you can sit at a table or take one of the private booths and sit on the floor, this is the option we go for. Shoes off and we are in our small raised carpet booth and the curtains are closed. A complimentary soup is served and we are given the menu. We go the classic chicken mandi and the lamb shoulder. The soup is downed and the main course is served. A huge silver platter with lid is stuck in front of us and we get tucked in. A whole chicken and a good-sized lamb shoulder sit on top a fantastic bed of rice. Both the chicken and lamb are super tender and really fall off the bone, I am in heaven. Digging in with our hands we wash this plate sent from the Gods down with an Avocado juice. The melt in the mouth lamb I think tops the chicken but this does not stop me from eating it, it is a very close second and the lamb is so good that a silver medal for the chicken is nothing to be ashamed of. I am stuffed and cannot move. As you can imagine this place is busy and is family-friendly, the constant chitter-chatter of other satisfied diners fills the airwaves and everyone seems happy. A hot black tea with fresh mint is served with a plate of Sweet Balls, yes we did for sure have a few laughs about our sweet balls. A light deep-fried doughy texture dipped in melted sweet sugar syrup is a welcome sight and the combo of the tea works so well. The bill arrives and comes in at 120 AED, which is about £25 or $32. I would have paid double this as the food was incredible. The walk home seemed a lot longer as we are stuffed to the brim and totally satisfied. Zam Zam.

I am in bed by 9 and sleep deeply. The local Mosque wakes me before sunrise with the call to pray and I stupidly make a cup of instant coffee, why did I do that. Showered and ready I head down to breakfast to see if they have a coffee that tastes like coffee.

So a pretty good cup or two of coffee are downed and we head out. Straight to the metro station we travel just three stops to Baniyas Square and walk down to the Creek. The gold and spice souqs are in this area as well as street after street of electronics and pretty much anything you could ever need, a very busy shopping area indeed. We are not here to shop but to jump on a boat across the Creek to the old souq.
