Whether it's probing the deepest parts of outer space for clues about the origins of the universe or the presence of intelligent life on other distant planets, or investigating topics like climate, or the very nature of life itself and what makes humans different from other living things, Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, does not shy away from asking the big questions.

As an author of many books, a consultant on sci-fi movies, and a regular contributor in popular media, he has found the right mix of high-level scholarly research and the ability to communicate with a general audience in a way that captures the popular imagination.

Asking Adam Frank to describe what drives these pursuits, his answer is a simple one, and it's no different than when he was a kid asking these same kinds of questions. Essentially, it's just a matter of wanting to know how does the universe work, and why is it ordered the way that it is?

The difference now is that he has the resources of an R1 research university and the ability to collaborate with experts in all different fields to tackle these big questions. And he applies that same passion for his research to teaching, trying to pass that knowledge and curiosity about the universe we live in to the next generation of researchers.
