Remarks by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations on towards the successful implementation of the women, peace and security agenda: moving from commitments to accomplishments in preparation for the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of SC resolution 1325 (2000) - Security Council, 8649th meeting.
After the Security Council anonymously today (29 Oct) adopted a resolution on the Women Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, Secretary-General António Guterres said, “the commitment that is always reflected around this table is not translating into real change around the world.”
Guterres said, change “is coming at a pace that is too slow for the women and girls whose lives depend on it, and for the effectiveness of our efforts to maintain international peace and security.”
The Secretary-General said, “when we fall short, women and girls and all members of society pay the consequences.”
He said failure to act on women’s rights and the principles of the WPS agenda “brings enormous costs” and called on Council members to “work together to change the narrative and improve by implementation the situation on the ground.”
