The Muscogee Food Sovereignty Initiative helps residents like Tuffolopa lead healthier lives by reforming the food system, encouraging farmers to raise heirloom ingredients for traditional recipes. Faced with extremely high rates of childhood obesity in the community, Johnnie Brausel, a retired tribal health officer of the Muscogee (Creek) Tribal Nation, says she knew that “the clinical approach was just going to continue forever, and get worse and worse, unless we stopped the flow upstream.”
