UN Envoy of the 2019 Climate Summit Luis Alfonso de Alba today said that the political will on combating climate change is “not as high as it should,” adding that the Organization needs to continue to work with all Member States and encourage them “to be full part of this solution.”
In New York UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the 2019 Climate Summit briefed the reporters about the upcoming programmes of the Summit. He noted that heads of States and Government from Member States will be invited to the Summit along with civil society, businesses, organizations, youth and other representatives from the public or societies at large.
The Envoy reiterated that the objective is to boost ambition and rapidly accelerate action to implement the Paris Agreement.
Asked about recent fires in the Amazon, De Alba said, “we are obviously encouraging all Member States to pay greater attention to nature, because nature can help in the solution of climate change, but also the nature needs to be protected from climate change, we are doing a lot of damage.”
De Alba added, “in the case of the recent fires, whether it was in the case of the fires in California, more recently the fires in the Amazon, the UN is ready to provide any support, any assistance, may be required in the context of our own capacities.”
The Climate Action Summit will be hosted by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York on 23 September 2019.
