Complete transcript: Do you feel angry with your parents?
I feel guilty for how annoyed I was with my parents over Christmas. What happened? Well, I was so excited to see them. I romanticized a trip going home. Then the second I walked the door, I immediately felt so annoyed. It makes me feel like a horrible daughter because they just wanted to have a nice dinner and I'm all irritated out of nowhere. Well, first of all, feeling irritated isn't out of nowhere. Irritation is a polyvagal response. It means that your nervous system is shifted into a deregulated state.
And based on what I know about your childhood and all of the conflict and fighting between your parents, I know that your body is reacting to what it's usually experienced around them, which is conflict and chaos. Then you blame yourself for having very normal feelings and you get more disregulated. Do and I get snippy when my mom asks what's wrong with me and it's like I just want to leave even though I looked forward to being there.
That's your nervous system going into flight. You want to get out of there. Here's the thing. It's okay to think and feel these things about your parents. You're not ungrateful or a bad daughter. Your nervous system is responding to the decades of memories and experiences you have with them. Whenever you get irritated for seemingly no reason, you want to remind yourself that you're reacting to the past with them. And then you want to set boundaries and take breaks when you need them so they don't end up saying things that you regret later. This is how you heal your relationship.
