Complete transcript: Fatherhood requires accountability

When you grow up with an absent father, and I'm also talking about a father who's in the home but emotionally unavailable or shut down, there's a trauma. A huge hole is left within us that we carry around. We start to believe that we weren't good enough or lovable enough to have him stay. And this is where eating disorders and addictions can develop because even though they're destructive, it's finally something that we can control. We couldn't control losing him, but we can control our weight and our food intake. And when we use substances as we get older, having an absent father shows up in our relationships because we can't relax. We have this constant voice in our head that says we're going to be abandoned, or we have walls up so high that no one can really get in. Sometimes our body speaks the grief that we've experienced through an autoimmune disorder or other mysterious illness. Because the truth is, fathers really are important. We have a culture that has really reduced a father's responsibility. Just providing a father's love and consistency shapes our health and the future of our relationships. This is a gentle call for men to be accountable parents and to stop running from themselves and their families.
