Welcome to Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory known throughout the world simply as "The Rock." This small peninsula is one of the most strategically important pieces of land on Earth, guarding the narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Ceded to Great Britain by Spain in 1713, Gibraltar is defined by its unique blend of British culture—with red phone booths and familiar currency—and vibrant Mediterranean flair. Accessing the territory is a unique logistical experience: many visitors park their cars in the Spanish border town of La Línea and choose to cross into the territory on foot. This journey is famous for leading directly over the Gibraltar International Airport runway, which must be safely navigated using a pedestrian traffic light system. Furthermore, while it is a British territory, Gibraltar is unique in that traffic drives on the right-hand side, reflecting its deep connection to continental Europe. The territory’s history is dominated by its military past, featuring vast defense tunnels and the famous Barbary macaques, the only wild monkey population in Europe. The official currency is the Gibraltar Pound (GIP), which is pegged to the British Pound, and English is the official language.
