Complete transcript: Heal generational cycles
Before you were born, you were already inside of your grandmother. When your mother was forming in your grandmother and her ovaries were developing, inside one of those ovaries were immature eggs. One of those eggs became you. So, what your grandmother experienced in her life physically alters your genes. That means your DNA sequence stayed the same, but the way your body reacts to your environment and the way you cope is inherited from her experiences. One fascinating study called the Dutch Hunger Study proved this. It studied babies of mothers who are pregnant during an extreme famine in the Netherlands.
And the study found that these famine babies showed intense nutritional damage and intense stress. They adapted to this experience to take in the max amount of calories and to expect stress. So as adults, while there was no famine, they actually ended up showing higher rates of depression, anxiety, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease from the trauma that their mother experienced. Research shows that epigenetic changes can be passed on for several generations and can even skip a generation. The good part is that these epigenetic changes aren't permanent. They're actually reversible through positive lifestyle choices. Quite literally, it can end with.
