This week's top stories of the week include:
0:15 Innovative app for women's rugby – The Wales Women’s Rugby Team is using new tech to help players better manage their treatment and recovery. Players log symptoms such as headaches, nausea or fatigue on an app. These symptoms can be the result of a concussion or they might be associated with the later stages of the menstrual cycle. The app helps players and medical staff differentiate between the two, ensuring players receive the correct treatment.
2:03 Improving road safety in India – Globally, road accidents kill 1.3 million people a year. 92% of these deaths occur in low and middle-income countries such as India. In 2007, Piyush Tewari's 16-year-old cousin was struck by a car as he walked home from school. Seriously injured, he begged passers-by for help for 30 minutes but no one intervened. Tewari’s response to his cousin’s death was to launch SaveLIFE Foundation (SLF).
5:36 How stress impacts our bodies – Chronic stress can impact the heart, says Ruma Bhargava. Not only that, it can severely affect the gut microbiome leading to ulcers and IBS. It can also hamper our reproductive health and even affect the immune system impairing our ability to fight off disease.
9:46 Rwanda leverages eco-tourism – Many people come to Rwanda to see a certain famous resident, the mountain gorilla. Rwanda has used this interest to drive the conservation of this endangered species. Rwanda’s smart tourism policies don’t only benefit the animals. High ticket prices deter unsustainable mass tourism and ensure proceeds filter into communities.
