Press Encounter with Ambassador Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations, on the situation in Gaza.
----------
Israeli ambassador Danny Danon told reporters that the Security Council “must only condemn Hamas today for its aggressive assault on civilians and finally designate it as a terrorist organization” in response to the violence in the Gaza strip and southern Israel and added, “If it will not be quiet in Israel, it will not be quiet in Gaza.”
Speaking today (13 Nov) prior to a closed meeting of the Council, Danon said Hamas fired at least 460 rockets into Israel over a 24-hr period striking several buildings, including two apartment complexes in Ashkelon. He said every time Hamas fired a rocket, Israeli families have “just 15 seconds to find their loves ones and run to a bomb shelter.”
The Israeli ambassador said “certain morally bankrupt members of the Security Council will jump here to blame Israel” with others that “claim to be objective will call for restrain on both sides.” He stressed that there is “no such a thing as both sides; there is Hamas that attacks and fires over 460 missiles at civilians, and there is Israel that protects its people.”
Asked about the military incursion carried out by Israeli forces which led to the latest round of violence, Danon said Israel takes action to “protect [its] people” and would “continue to do that.” He said Hamas continued to dig tunnels and “think about ways to attack Israel” adding that Israel would continue to “take any measure necessary” to protect its people.
In response to a question on a possible ceasefire being brokered by Egypt, the ambassador said Israel’s “approach is very clear; if it will not be quiet in Israel, it will not be quiet in Gaza.” He said Hamas leaders know “exactly what are the capabilities of the Israeli IDF, and they know we can get to them even if they hide beneath tunnels and beneath hospitals.”
