In 2019, 11 YGLs from 11 countries returned to Kakuma for a second Impact Expedition where they delivered an Executive Leadership Module to 30 rising young leaders from the refugee and host community in Kakuma. The module was designed to help spur greater self-employment within the camp. The team also facilitated the establishment of the Kakuma Hub of the GSC – the first of its kind in a refugee camp. In lieu of a third Impact Expedition to Kakuma in 2020, the project team hosted a virtual event that centred on celebrating refugee stories, showcasing project milestones, and mobilising stakeholders and constituents for action.
The World Economic Forum’s Kakuma Refugee Settlement Project (Kakuma Project) is a cross-community initiative between the Forum of Young Global Leaders and the Global Shapers Community (GSC) that aims to narrow the achievement gap of Kakuma refugees. This project was established in 2018 when a group of YGLs embarked on an Impact Expedition to Kakuma – a learning journey that enabled them to better understand the camp’s pressing needs as well as impact opportunities that they could address through the power of collective networks.
