Kraków is considered the cultural capital of Poland and has played a prominent role in Europe for several centuries. In the Middle Ages, the city was fortified with double walls, 47 fortified towers and 8 city gates.
The most splendid basilica in Kraków has towered over the city since the 14th century. The baroque Church of St. Anne was built on ancient foundations. Franciscan monks came to Kraków in 1237 and soon began to build their own church. In 1850, a fire caused great damage. The Dominians also came to Warsaw. The Saints Peter and Paul Church, which is the Roman Jesuit Church and resembles Il Gesu, a foundation of King Sigismund, the third Wasa. One of the greatest early baroque churches in Central Europe.
The Wawel Hill became a national sanctuary. An embodiment of the highest spiritual and patriotic values of Poland, a symbol of religious and political tradition. After the royal court moved from Kraków to Warsaw, the castle lost its significance. The king summoned the Augustinian monks from Prague.
The New Square is a trading place. Nowadays, a daily food and flower market. From the beginning, it was the Jewish quarter with the Isaak Synagoge. The temple dates from the end of the 15th century and is the oldest synagogue in Poland.
The metropolis on the Weichsel River radiates energy and atmosphere, a mix of culture and the essence of being alive.
