Malbork Castle is the most powerful medieval fortress in Europe, and today one of the main tourist attractions in Poland. The castle was a Christian place of pilgrimage, residence of the German Order of Knights, and later Polish seat of the Starnosten, royal secondary residence and Prussian barracks. It is the largest brick castle.

1309 the Grandmaster Siegfried Von Feuchtwangen decided to move the headquarters from Venice to Malbork Castle. The choice of the location was certainly based on its convenient position on the river and the sufficient available space next the town. Bridges over the battlements and 6 gates had to be passed to get to the entrance of the inner castle and then on to the high castle. Thus the castle became impregnable.

It was the Polish and Lithuanian troops against which the Grandmaster of the order had to defend himself for 2 months, until they finally withdrew unsuccessfully. With the incredible sum of 190,000 Hungarian Florin, the Polish king and the city of Gdańsk bribed the mercenaries stationed here to open the gates.

The history of the Malbork Castle is a reflection of the ever changing German-Polish history, and one of the most magnificent monuments of the common cultural heritage of both nations.
