Rebeca Gyumi is the Founder and Executive Director at Msichana Initiative, a Tanzanian NGO which aims to empower girls through education and addresses challenges which limit girls’ right to education. Ms. Gyumi challenged the Tanzanian Law of Marriage Act of 1971 that allowed girls to marry as young as the age of 14 and she won the case. In 2018, she was one of the recipients of United Nations Human Rights Award, an award given to individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements in human rights.
