Today we're going to take a look at subordinating conjunctions. These are big, long words for a very simple idea. A conjunction is just a word that connects two parts of a sentence. And how about "subordinating"? This word means "making something less important," and subordinating conjunctions introduce a part of a sentence that is less important than the main part. Why is it less important? It is what we call a dependent clause—it can't survive on its own. Think about it: if you say, "after we go to the mall," that is not a complete sentence. You need to attach it to an independent clause that is a complete sentence. For example, you could say, "Before we go to the mall, we should study." Are you ready?
