Complete transcript: The sky technique

Your eyes speak the language of your nervous system. Today I'm going to show you an exercise to use your eyes to calm your body. When we experience trauma, hypervigilance, or something beyond our stress threshold, we lose something called peripheral vision. So instead of having a broader view, we actually get tunnel vision and can only focus on the threat or the danger. Our pupils get bigger, our body tenses, and our nervous system goes into a sympathetic state. The quickest way to bring ourselves back into calm or to a parasympathetic state is to consciously use our peripheral vision. To do that, we're going to practice something called the sky technique. You can do the sitting, standing, or walking. You're going to look out the horizon and let your eyes soften, which really just means relax the muscles behind your eyes. Now, you're going to begin to pay attention to everything along the edges of your ey line without moving your eyes. You're going to do that for 30 seconds as you ba breathe slowly and deeply. Then you're going to let your eyes go back to normal and check in and see how your body feels.
