Complete transcript: Therapist on emotional burnout: frustrated

My mom is coming to me with all these problems with my dad and I get it. I feel bad for her. That's tough. In what way was she expecting you to help her? She just wants me to listen and I give her advice and she doesn't take it. She's always complaining to me about my dad and her health. And I get it. I want her life to be better, but she just won't change anything. And it's so hard to listen to someone who's stuck in life and expects you not to get emotionally burnt out in the same cycle over and over again.

And my mom is just such a nice person and I love her. But I end up getting so triggered and sometimes I'm mean to her and I snap. I want to be patient and I feel so ungrateful because she did so much for us growing up. And then you feel awful and you shame yourself about it. Yep. And then I'm back into the cycle all over again. The emotional burnout cycle is so real. What you're feeling makes a lot of sense and you're not a bad person. You're a frustrated person who actually feels helpless.
