“The United States assesses that Iran is responsible” for attacks on two tankers in Gulf of Oman earlier today, said Acting US Ambassador to the United Nations Jonathan Cohen after the closed-door consultations of the Security Council.
No proxy group in the area has the resources or skill to act with this level of sophistication. Iran however, has the weapons, the expertise and the requisite intelligence information to pull this off,” Cohen told reporters in New York today after the Council’s consultations. “And Iran is doing just what it promised: Teheran declared on April 22nd that it will interrupt the flow of oil through the straits of Hurmuz,” he added.
In the meeting of the Council behind the closed doors, Cohen reportedly asked the Security Council members to remain seized by the matter and said that his country “will continue its diplomatic and economic efforts to bring Iran to the negotiating table” and has invited Iran to “meet us with diplomacy, not with terror, attacks on ships, infrastructure and diplomatic facilities.”
