Complete transcript: When your parent has no interest in your life | Understanding and healing
Adult child: I got a promotion!
Parent: Oh honey, that's nice.
Adult child: I'm going to be managing a whole department.
Parent: That's amazing. Are you planning on staying for dinner?
Adult child: I'll have dinner, then I'll have to go home. I'm having a lot of issues with my apartment, and I'm actually thinking about moving.
Parent: Oh nice. (awkward silence)
Adult child: You know mom, I just told you a few things about my life, which I don't normally do. Because you don't seem to care, and you really didn't add to much about them.
Parent: Yes, I'm a disinterested parent. I've been in a freeze shutdown state for so long, I don't really know how to engage. It's not just with you it's with everyone. I don't want to get into it, but my entire life has been in survival mode. So eventually I went into my own little world to cope.
Adult child: I get it. I just think it would be nice to have a parent who cares. You know mother me. And show some sort of interest of what's going on in my life. I see other people and their mothers shopping and doing things together, and sometimes if I'm honest, I feel angry that I never got that.
Parent: No I never go that either, so I never really knew how to bond with you. If you notice, I don't really have many friends either. Relationships of all kinds have felt so awkward and weird to me. When I became a mother, I hate to say this, I even felt awkward with you and your sister. I just stick to small talk and trying to make dinners and hope neither of you notice.
