Today's city is not the phenomenon of steel, concrete, and glass we imagine—it is the widespread protoplasm of low-rise, low-density wood architecture comprising the majority of the enclosed volumes and open places in which we live. Intentionally or not, it is being shaped by an immediate, pressing revolution in the circumstances of daily life with profound, transformational consequences for architecture. This lecture is an appeal for a fresh, unflinching assessment of the value of this inherited physical settlement and a proposal for a new way to imagine its salvaging, renewal, and propagation for the future we will actually live in. Jonathan Levi is Principal ofJonathan Levi Architects and Adjunct Professor of Architectural Design.
