There are many characteristics of hantavirus that make it both challenging to monitor in an outbreak like this, but also mean it poses a low pandemic risk.

What about the people still on board the cruise ship? The remaining passengers are being monitored and cared for by specialist doctors who have been flown in. The ship is now headed to Tenerife, where it will anchor off shore. Passengers will be taken via a small boat straight to a quarantine facility (for Spanish passengers) or straight to a plane (for everyone else) that will take them back to their home countries, where they and their close contacts will be monitored.
