I'm doing inner child work. What's that? It's when you start to acknowledge the inner child that lives inside of you and all the things that it's experienced. What does that do? Well, if when you were little, you were regularly screamed at or shamed or criticized, we don't use logic or our thinking brain. We fully feel the trauma in our nervous system, and it impacts our brain development. As adults, this will be called anxiety, depression, bipolar, or borderline.

Makes total sense. What's a good place to start? Well, I start with writing a short letter to my inner child every day in my journal. I let them know that they're safe and able to say no, and they don't have to please everyone. And I let them know that I'm going to practice self-care and have clear boundaries. Now, these are things I didn't have growing up and they help my inner child heal.

I also made my phone background a picture of myself at age five so that I can remind myself that when I'm being mean, I'm also being mean to that inner child. It helps you be more self-compassionate.
