Chowhound video producer Olivia is testing out the recently released “secret” recipe to make IKEA’s famous Swedish Meatballs, from home. She learns how to make the famous pork and beef recipe for the first time and figures out that certain “mistakes” can result in her own take on the furniture store's signature dish. Sous-chef Ori gets to have a meatball of her own too!
Recipe from Delish (with metric conversions):
Ikea Meatballs At Home, serves four
For the meatballs:
500 grams beef mince (roughly one pound ground beef)
250 grams pork mince (roughly 1/2 pound ground pork)
1 onion finely chopped
1 clove of garlic (crushed or minced)
100 grams (3.5 ounces) breadcrumbs
1 egg
5 tablespoons of whole milk
Generous salt and pepper
For the cream sauce:
Dash of oil
40 grams (roughly 2.5 tablespoons) of butter
40 grams (roughly 2.5 tablespoons) of flour
150 milliliters (five fluid ounces) vegetable stock
150 milliliters (five fluid ounces) beef stock
150 milliliter (five fluid ounces) heavy cream
2 teaspoons soy sauce
1 teaspoons Dijon mustard
Combine beef and pork mince (ground beef and pork) and mix with your fingers to break up any lumps. Add finely chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg and mix. Add milk and season well with salt and pepper.
Shape mixture into small, round balls. Place on a clean plate, cover and store in the fridge for two hours (this will help them hold their shape whilst cooking).
In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. When hot, gently add meatballs and brown on all sides.
When browned, add to an ovenproof dish and cover. Place in a hot oven at 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit) and cook for a further 30 minutes.
Melt butter in a pan. Whisk in flour and stir for two minutes. Add the vegetable stock and beef stock and continue to stir. Add the heavy cream, soy sauce and Dijon mustard. Bring it to a simmer and allow the sauce to thicken.
When ready to eat, serve with your favorite potatoes -- either creamy mash or mini new boiled potatoes. Enjoy!
