Mahalo Windows expert Sean Hewitt gives a tutorial on AutoPlay options in Windows 7.

AutoPlay is what happens when there is an automatic event on your computer. For example, when you insert a CD into your computer, AutoPlay dictates what the computer will do with that CD without you having to manually do anything.

1. To set the AutoPlay settings, click on the Start menu at the bottom left corner of your desktop, followed by the Control Panel.

2. Choose Programs then Default Programs. Second from the bottom you will find Change AutoPlay Settings. Select this option and it will prompt the AutoPlay menu. If you don't want anything to happen when you insert a CD, simply uncheck the box in the upper left corner that says Use AutoPlay for all media and devices.

3. AutoPlay will now be disabled for all of your items. To specify what AutoPlay will do for other items, just browse the menu and click on the drop-down sub-menus along the right side. This includes Software and games, Pictures, Audio files, Blank CD and DVD.

4. After you have made changes to these features, you may want to reset all the AutoPlay functions back to the original factory settings. To do this, just click on the Reset all default button in the bottom left corner.

5. To preserve whatever changes you have made, be sure to click Save in the bottom right corner. If you have a device connected to your computer, that device will become listed at the bottom center of the menu. By clicking on it, you will be able to specify how AutoPlay will affect that device.
