Mahalo's Windows expert Sean Hewitt explains the volume options in Windows 7.

Adjust Master Volume
---------------------------------------------------------------------

To adjust the master volume on your computer, click once on the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of your screen. From here you can set the output level of volume by moving the slider up or down. To mute, click the speaker icon on the volume mixer bar.

Adjust Program Volume(s)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

To adjust other programs' volume, click the Mixer button below the speaker icon on the volume mixer bar. You can adjust all volumes at once or individual volumes.
You can also mute each program by clicking the speaker icons.

View programs you have playing sound by right-clicking the speaker icon in the bottom right corner of the screen then click Playback items.

Adjust Recording, Sounds, Communication
---------------------------------------------------------------------

By clicking the Recording tab, you can see the devices connected to the computer that you can record to, like a microphone.

Click the Sounds tab to adjust the types of sound your computer makes at certain events, like closing a program or alerting you to a low battery.

The Communications tab lets you adjust which sounds are reduced or muted when you use your computer to make or receive phone calls.
