Complete transcript: Stop over explaining yourself
People think they overexplain to avoid hurting another person's feelings. But really, we overexlain to keep ourselves safe. So many of us have experienced so much harsh judgment, punishment, or have not been believed that our nervous system immediately goes into hyperarousal. You can tell in conversation when you go into hyperarousal because you're explaining so much. You almost feel like you're out of control and you can't stop yourself. You're adding in all of these details and over apologizing and you're not really tuning in to the other person and how they feel. This can make the other person feel overwhelmed and like they need to comfort you. And at the same time, it keeps your nervous system disregulated. If you want to have a regulated nervous system and feel and look more confident, the most important practice is keeping your responses short and breaking the habit of overexlaining. People love a person that's clear and decisive. You're not a child who's going to be in trouble anymore. If someone gets upset or disappointed with you, that's okay. That's part of being an empowered adult. You can't please everyone and your nervous system will thank.
