A team of researchers at the Universities of Oxford, Manchester, Edinburgh and Shanghai Jiao Tong have worked out how the 'spike wave' or 'vertical wave' can happen.

Experiments were carried out in the FloWave Ocean Energy Research facility, University of Edinburgh.
