Uganda is currently hosting more than half a million refugees, including up to 80,000 South Sudanese who have fled from escalating conflict back at home, according to the UN Refugees Agency (UNCHR). To assist refugees in need of food and nutrition, the World Food Programme (WFP) carries out an emergency operation which includes providing cooked meals, in addition to monthly rations or cash assistance, depending on location and eligibility criteria. This large-scale of operation is expected to cost US$7 million per month, but WFP is now facing severe funding shortages, threatening its ability to sustain its assistance to refugees.
