United Nations - Jeremie, Haiti, 10 October 2016.
In Jeremie (Haiti), one of the areas worst affected by Hurricane Matthew, the World Food Programme (WFP) distributed food rations to 2,500 people whose homes have been destroyed and who are now living in a school compound shelter.
WFP has also handed over 12 million tonnes of food to local authorities for immediate distribution to 5,000 people.
The food ration composed of cereal, pulses and oil is sufficient for a family to meet its food needs for a month.
Preliminary results from the Emergency Food Security Assessments indicate almost 100 percent of crops are destroyed in the Grand-Anse department, and more than half the livestock killed. Damaged roads and destroyed bridges connecting Port-au-Prince with the hurricane-hit areas are also challenge. A WFP-chartered helicopter began flying humanitarian workers and relief supplies to affected areas on Friday, 7 October.
In its rampage through the Caribbean, Hurricane Matthew claimed lives, and left extensive flooding and mudslides, damage to roads and buildings, and electricity and water shortages in parts of Haiti and Cuba.
WFP is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. Each year, WFP assists some 80 million people in around 80 countries.
