On January 19, 2018, Maria Hinojosa, a journalist best known as the host of National Public Radio's Latino USA, delivered the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Address. Prior to the address, Hinojosa met with students for a discussion at Douglass Leadership House, followed by a reception where she was presented with a copy of a letter from Frederick Douglass.

Hinojosa is a four-time Emmy winner and is also the founder of Futuro Media Group, the only Latina owned independent media company in the US, and hosts the series By the Numbers on PBS. She is an outspoken advocate for the rights of immigrants and for immigration reform, and is the first person of Latino descent to deliver the MLK Commemorative Address.
