United Nations - Police Commissioner Greg Hinds explains the policing mandate of the United Nations Mission in Liberia. Based on the mandate, United Nations Police helps the government to develop its national security strategy. The police component in UNMIL also supports the national police to develop and improve leadership, internal management mechanisms and developing internal accountability. The mission is in its exit strategy, having been deployed in 2003.
United Nations Police is deployed in 12 peacekeeping operations, as well as 6 Special Political Missions to help restore confidence in host-State police and rule of law structures and serving to protect civilians, providing electoral and border security and management, limiting the effects of transnational organised crime, investigating and preventing cases of sexual and gender-based violence.
